Abstract
Shigella bacteria are a common cause of diarrhea in children and the elderly. Despite the widespread belief that this diarrheal disease causes significant morbidity and mortality rates, exceeding one million deaths annually worldwide, current data on the disease is limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Shigella bacteria and its relationship to age and sex among patients with acute diarrhea. Stool samples were systematically collected from patients with acute diarrhea using clean, sterile containers to ensure sample integrity. The samples were then transported to the laboratory, and the bacteria were isolated using selective culture media to detect the presence of Shigella. The results showed an infection rate of 41.3%, with a higher concentration among the 20-59 year age group. No statistically significant differences were found between the sexes. These findings highlight the importance of health interventions and improved water and sanitation conditions to reduce the spread of infection. The study recommends increased health awareness and improved health infrastructure to mitigate the spread of Shigella bacteria.................. Keywords:.............
