This study focuses on Al-Sawi’s methodology in his marginal notes: a collection of annotations and comments he made on Tafsir al-Jalalayn. While some researchers have examined his approach from doctrinal and rhetorical perspectives, this research aims to highlight his methodology specifically regarding his attention to the classification of Makki and Madani surahs, the reasons for revelation, his inclusion of various narrations, attention to different Qira’at (readings) and their narrations, as well as his references to rules of Tajweed (recitation).The research adopts a scholarly approach combining the historical method — particularly for biographical insights into Al-Sawi and the authors of Tafsir al-Jalalayn — the analytical method for examining cited examples, and at times the critical method. Additionally, the research attempts to address some of the questions raised by Al-Sawi in his commentary.The study arrives at several conclusions, the most prominent of which is: Al-Sawi’s skill in his marginal notes appears in his valuable additions to Tafsir al-Jalalayn, thereby increasing its benefit. He also complements what was omitted — for instance, when Al-Mahalli limits himself to one or two opinions, Al-Sawi elaborates further. He avoids disrespect or harsh criticism, preferring academic critique instead. He supports his views with traditional narrations and logical reasoning. Recommendations: Researchers are encouraged to intensify efforts to extract the hidden gems from this marginal commentary and to organize academic conferences to explore the scholarly legacy of this Tafsir.
