This study examines image schemas in Arabic metaphors within Sufi texts from a cognitive semiotic perspective, aiming to uncover the mental structures that allow mystics to transform abstract spiritual experiences into perceptible mental images. The research highlights the role of key image schemas-Path, Container, and Force-in structuring Sufi metaphors, providing a cognitive framework to represent spiritual concepts such as spiritual conduct, divine proximity, annihilation, attraction, sobriety, and mystical taste. The analysis demonstrates that Sufi metaphor is not merely decorative but a cognitive tool reflecting the interaction between mind, body, and environment, transforming experiential states into comprehensible mental models. The study also reveals that Sufi texts follow an intrinsic cognitive logic, relying on image schemas to clarify relations between the apparent and the hidden, as well as between human and divine will, thereby embodying the mystical “indication” as a sensory-cognitive process. The findings offer a contemporary perspective on Sufi discourse, bridging classical Arabic heritage and modern cognitive insights, and open avenues for further research in cognitive semiotics of spiritual experience.
