Abstract
This study examined the relationship between economic pressures and family stability among a sample of families in Derna, Libya. A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted, and data were collected using a questionnaire administered to heads of households or wives, yielding 148 valid responses. The data were analyzed using SPSS. Economic pressures were measured across three dimensions: low income and the high cost of living, the housing crisis and rising rents, and accumulated debts and financial obligations. Family stability was assessed in terms of marital adjustment, family cohesion, and social adaptation. The results indicated a high overall level of economic pressure (M = 4.12), with debts and financial obligations ranking first (M = 4.17). The mean score for family stability was 2.78, indicating a moderate level. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between overall economic pressure and family stability (r = -0.742, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that the three dimensions jointly explained 61.6% of the variance in family stability (R = 0.785, p < 0.001). Given the cross-sectional correlational design, the findings indicate an association rather than causation. The study recommends regulating the rental market, strengthening housing initiatives, restructuring debt, enhancing support from social solidarity institutions, supporting micro-enterprises, and establishing family counseling centers in Derna....................... Keywords:................ Economic pressures; Family stability; Marital adjustment; Household debt.
