Abstract
Automated pulsar candidate classification is challenging due to severe class imbalance, noise, and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). This study presents a leakage-free comparative machine learning framework using the HTRU2 dataset of 17,898 instances, including 1,639 pulsars and 16,259 non-pulsars represented by eight statistical features. Data were split before preprocessing, with scaling and hybrid resampling restricted to the training set. The framework evaluates classical and ensemble models, XGBoost, MLP, hybrid undersampling–SMOTE, and H2O AutoML using comprehensive classification metrics, supported by 10-fold cross-validation, bootstrap confidence intervals, and McNemar’s tests.
On the untouched test set, H2O AutoML achieved 98.12% accuracy, 89.22% F1-score, 84.96% recall, 99.45% specificity, 97.71% ROC-AUC, and MCC = 0.8833, while XGBoost achieved 98.06% accuracy and F1 = 0.8901. Hybrid resampling increased XGBoost recall from 85.57% to 91.87% and reduced FNR from 14.43% to 8.13%, but decreased accuracy to 96.42%, demonstrating a sensitivity–precision trade-off rather than universal improvement. Overall, AutoML and hybrid resampling provide complementary strategies for imbalanced pulsar classification. Since no independent astronomical dataset was used, the study makes no claim of cross-survey generalization or deployment readiness..................
